July 15th is officially Charles & Ishmail Day here in Kansas City, presented by Mayor Quinton Lucas over the weekend. Very well deserving to these two professional athletes, born and raised here in Kansas City, that dedicated this past weekend to giving back to KC. Mayor Q came out to the Winners Circle weekend block party to commemorate with the athletes and community of Kansas City as he presented the ‘Official Day’ declaration to both Harris and Wainright. Along with an incredible networking mixer, panel, and sports skill camps over the weekend – the ‘Legacy Makers’ block party was a big win for the city also!

Charles Harris is an alum of Lincoln Prep and Mizzou and currently a Defensive End for the Detroit Lions of the NFL. Ish Wainright, on the other hand, is an alum of Raytown South and Baylor University; and, currently a Forward for the Phoenix Suns of the NBA. Harris, back in 2018, made an important donation to Lincoln Prep to help renovate their football field allowing this historical school to now host home football games on the new field after years of being unable to. Ish is one of the sons of the legendary Calvin Wainright, who left an everlasting footprint on not only the basketball community but the KC community as a whole.

The ‘Legacy Makers’ Block Party included popular Kansas City entrepreneurs and artist performances including Kye Colors, Rarie, and Love Mae, C. There were also food trucks like The Sandwich Hut, KC Soul Sistas, and KC Wing Bar to serve delicious food for the duration of the block party. The day started with a bunch of activities for families with their kids to participate in with Charles and Ish heading their own teams against each other. Games on the Gregg/Klice Community Center Field included: Tug of War, 3 Pt Basketball Contest, and a flag football game with Charles and Ish leading Team Harris and Team Wainright. Both kids and adults enthusiastically joined in on the games helping the face-off between these two athletes.

An attendee of the event mentioned how “it’s beautiful to see our city (Kansas City) come together as everyone did today. We need more of this and less violence. This day has been filled with much love that needs to be spread more around Kansas City”.

This block party showed how Kansas City can come together despite the trying times we are in as a community and continue to bring positive change forward. Both Harris and Wainright credited their dedicated and passion-driven managers, C Reneé (Ish Wainright) and Dorian Giles (Charles Harris), as well as their hardworking team for helping put on an impeccable weekend for our great city.

With the success of this Winners Circle Weekend, we are excited for the 2nd annual weekend in 2024.
