Wines, Scotches and Coffees, Oh My!

Of all the bar genres in Kansas City, the wine bar is woefully underrepresented. Fortunately for us, the newly opened JP Wine Bar Coffee House has stepped up to fill that void.

JP’s décor is sleek and modern; chartreuse walls contrast nicely with dark cherry furniture, and silver chandeliers shaped in abstract swirls hang overhead. A row of booths lines the hallway to the private dining room in the back, where wine lockers await bottles for JP wine club members.

JP, where Tchoupitoulas used to reside, opens at 6 a.m. daily to serve your coffee and scone needs. Heartier fare is available for lunch; at night, the bar offers delectable small-plate items, such as a goat-cheese salad or a fig-and-pear dish drenched in locally produced honey. An assortment of desserts is also worth checking out, as are the cheese flights — samples of unusual cheese served with crackers, fruit and other garnishes.

Drinks are the main focus, though. There’s a cool-sounding wine cocktail list as well as plenty of alcoholic coffee drinks. Wine flights consist of three or four 2-ounce samples, and the bar offers three scotch flights — one highlights different scotch-producing regions, another features high-end brands, and the third demonstrates how oak casks can affect the taste of the drink.
