Wild Turkey Day

Before you whip out the sweatpants and prop your turkey-stuffed self in front of the TV, spend the morning in your shiniest duds getting crunked and getting down to some live rhythm and blues. Now in its 45th year, the Annual Thanksgiving Day Dance, held in the National Guard Armory (100 South 20th Street in Kansas City, Kansas), is a rollicking good time and a relic of the sassy vigor that signified KC’s wailin’ music scene of yesteryear.Organized by former Grand Emporium proprietor Roger Naber, this year’s event features racy, Grammy-winning R&B diva Millie Jackson. Famous for her raunchy lyrics, Miss Jackson (if you’re nasty) has been in the biz for more than 35 years and shows no sign of slowing down. She runs her own record label, hosts a radio show in Dallas and continues to record.Floyd Taylor and Johnnie Taylor Jr. also perform. Tickets start at $40 and can be ordered through Ticketmaster. This dance, which starts at 10 a.m., is strictly for the grown-ups, so no one under 21 is allowed. Dress your best and BYO booze. Call 816-753-7979 for more information.
