No one mourns the wicked, but everyone toasts the talented. Fifteen years after novelist Gregory Maguire first dished the untold tale of the Wicked Witch of the West, here’s another story that took the world too long to get a chance to discover: that of Stephen Schwartz, that wizard of witches and princesses, the songwriter and lyricist behind the Broadway hits Wicked, Godspell and Pippin as well as the Disney films Enchanted and Pocahontas. Dear old Schwartz and his dear old melodies enjoy the tribute-to-a-master treatment as a cast of 21 sings and dances through his most memorable tunes. Celebration in Song: The Music of Stephen Schwartz premieres at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City (5801 West 115th Street, Overland Park). As always with the JCC, expect a professional-caliber production. Tickets run $19 for nonmembers, $13 for members and $10 for students; call 913-327-8000.
