What You Eat

Where most people see partially hydrogenated oils and transfats, Mark Winne sees racism and government malfeasance. The author of Closing the Food Gap: Resetting the Table in the Land of Plenty is a sociologist by trade and an activist at heart. He has dedicated his professional life to developing farmers’ markets, co-ops, community gardens, food banks and avenues for education. His gig as a food policy fellow with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation allows him to consult with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on pollution and the decline of family farms. Winne will discuss “The Ugly Underbelly of the American Food System” and sign copies of his new book at 6:30 tonight at Kansas City’s Central Library (14 West 10th Street, 816-701-3400). A 6 p.m. reception precedes the free event; call 816-701-3407 to reserve a seat. For more information, see kclibrary.org
