If you’ve got to plan a date this weekend, you’re all set. This Sunday is Westport Movies in the Parking Lot. Head over to the lot behind Harry’s Bar and Tables (501 Westport Road) for a night of eats and drinks and a trio of films: Waiting, Office Space and Pulp Fiction. The event starts at 8 p.m. and runs until 3 a.m. The movies are free.
Leave your house at 7 p.m. and stop by the Foundry for beer ice cream and beer floats. They’re holding a Back to School Ice Cream Social with Bell’s Kalamazoo Stout, Boulevard Harvest Dance, McCoy’s Farmhouse, Stiegl Weisse and St. Louis Peche ice cream. The two flavors of beer float will be made with St. Louis Framboise and McCoy’s Milk Stout.
Your 20s are about having fun, so the 75th Street Brewery (520 W. 75th St.) is kicking off its 20th anniversary with a Summer Beer Fest, which is slated for Saturday, August 17, from 1 to 5 p.m. The party, held in the Alley, comes with a commemorative glass, a free buffet and unlimited beer from Big Rip, 23rd Street Brewery, Boulevard and McCoy’s. Tickets cost $25 ($20 for Mug Club members). The proceeds benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater KC.
If you’re given the option of a proper fried-chicken dinner, you should take it. And Anthony’s Restaurant & Lounge (701 Grand), best known for classic Italian dishes, makes a mean fried-chicken dinner. Every Sunday from 12 to 8 p.m., Anthony’s has three pieces of fried chicken, a side, salad and bread for $12.95.
Perk up with a cup of hot or iced coffee from the new Roasterie coffee shop inside the remodeled Hen House (4050 W. 83rd St.) in Prairie Village’s Corinth Square. It’s got the full coffee menu, along with Roasterie-branded merchandise and coffee. Another Roasterie coffee shop is expected to open in the Prairie Village Hen House at 6950 Mission Lane in 2014.
You do a fine job with your grill, but you’ve got nothing on the folks at Bluestem (900 Westport Road). The Westport restaurant’s annual summer BBQ is slated for Sunday, August 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. It’s all-you-can-eat barbecue, sides and desserts, along with a cocktail and some live music, for $35. Reservations are required; snag one by calling 816-561-1101.
Two words you don’t hear often: kosher barbecue. Kansas City Vaad Kosher BBQ Competition and Festival is Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at B’nai Jehudah (12320 Nall) in Overland Park.
