War Story

Fortunately for those of us used to relying solely on a high school textbook version of American history, historians such as Mitch Yockelson plug some gaps. Yockelson, who works at the National Archives, shares the rarely told tale of World War I’s rough equivalent of D-Day at a free lecture at 11 a.m. at the National World War One Museum (100 West 26th, 816-784-1918). Yockelson’s book, Borrowed Soldiers, details how fresh but uncertain American II Corps joined battle-weary British and Australian forces in September 1918 to overcome the Hindenburg Line, a stretch of German troops once thought to be impenetrable. As the Normandy landing did 26 years later, the effort brought the German army to its knees. See libertymemorialmuseum.org for more information.
