Vinyl Honor

Been to a record store lately? Yes? Good for you. You deserve a treat. Today is Record Store Day: the third-annual celebration of independently owned record stores and the people who keep them in business. Conceived in 2007, the occasion is observed by more than 300 mom-and-pop shops across the country. Kansas City’s vinyl holdouts are hip to the cause, with giveaways, sales and limited-edition releases aplenty (a full list of which can be found at recordstoreday.com). Participating stores include Zebedee’s (1208 West 39th Street, 816-960-6900), Vinyl Renaissance (10922 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee, 913-962-0014), Needmore Discs (11212 West 75th Street, also in Shawnee, 913-248-8622) and Prospero’s (1800 West 39th Street, 816-531-9673). Lawrence residents will want to pop into Love Garden Sounds (936 1/2 Massachusetts, 785-843-1551) and Kief’s Downtown Music (823 Massachusetts, 785-843-9111). Set your alarm — the early bird gets the limited-edition Flaming Lips 7-inch cover of Madonna’s “Borderline.”
