Vegfest, Jazzoo, Old Shawnee Days, and much more: KC’s food and drink events for June 3-9

Monday, June 3

Meet and share a whiskey tasting with J. Rieger & Co. co-founder Andy Rieger from 6–8 p.m. tonight at Harry’s Tavern in south KC (13657 Washington Street). Each $20 ticket includes samples of all the Rieger products (whiskey, amaro, vodka, and gin) and paired appetizers. Tickets are available next door to Harry’s Tavern at Lukas Wine and Spirits. 

Tuesday, June 4

From 6–9 p.m., Chicken N Pickle (1761 Burlington) is hosting a beer and cheese tasting, featuring six pairings of cheese and KC Bier Company beers. Tickets are $18, and can be purchased via Eventbrite.

Celebrate World Rosé day with a paired tasting at Chaz on the Plaza (325 Ward Parkway). The World of Rosé event includes wines from Germany, Italy, France, and California paired with shared plates created by chef Shawn Hartwig. Tickets are $35 a person and include tastings of several wines and food (though not tax or gratuity). Pick up tickets via Eventbrite.

Thursday, June 6

Old Shawnee Days kicks off tonight at 6 p.m. at Old Shawnee Town 1929 (11501 West 57th Street) and runs all weekend. The event features dozens of food vendors and concessions, including Big Dogs BBQ, the Dapper Doughnut, Lago Vista street tacos, Dottie’s Kitchen, the Cooking Crew, and many more. Friday, June 7

Vegfest begins tonight at City Market Park (5 West 3rd Street), marking a weekend of celebrating plant-based diets. Events include lots of food sampling, yoga, a beer garden, and a host of presentations on everything from Vegan meal prep to urban gardening to tackling food insecurity. Jazzoo takes place tonight at the Kansas City Zoo (6800 Zoo Drive). The dressy evening event, now in its 30th year, is the largest single fundraiser for the zoo and features a night of food, music, and drink. Participating restaurants this year include J. Gilbert’s, Ignite Wood-Fired Grill, Big Whiskey’s, District Pour House, Ra Sushi, Parker at the Fontaine, and many more. Tickets are $175, and can be purchased here.

Saturday, June 8

Big Slick turns ten this year, and the Big Slick Celebrity Block Party runs today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Prairiefire (5661 West 135th Street). Hosted by celebrities Paul Rudd, Jason Sudekis, Rob Riggle, and Eric Stonestreet, Big Slick raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for Children’s Mercy Hospitals. The Block Party will feature a red carpet prior to the Big Slick Bowling Tournament, food trucks, and other concessions. Learn more about all Big Slick events via its website.

Johnny’s Tavern in Lawrence (401 N 2nd Street) is hosting its 20th annual Cajun Night, featuring a big crawfish boil, beer specials, and live music. The party starts at 4 p.m.; no tickets required.

Sunday, June 9

Six Lawrence restaurants are facing off at tonight’s Taco Wars at the Replay Lounge (946 Massachusetts Street). A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Civil Liberties Union. Participating restaurants include Lark a Fare, Terrebonne Cafe, Pop Up Tacos, La Parilla, JBs Tacos, and Mass St. Fish House & Raw Bar. The cover is $10, with additional food and drink available for purchase. This is an all-ages event that runs from 6 to 9 p.m.

Each Sunday this summer, Servaes Brewing Company (10921 Johnson Drive) will be releasing a new daiquiri-inspired sour beer. The daiquiri series features low-alcohol beers that at fruit-forward, slightly sweet and slightly tart. More info here.
