If you’re looking to peek into metal’s future, this is a good place to start. Relapse is in the vanguard of underground metal labels, and it’s the driving force behind the Contamination festival and its accompanying compilation CDs and package tours. This DVD chronicles 4 hours of highlights from a two-day festival at the Trocadero in Philadelphia. Not everyone on Relapse’s roster is included (fanatics will lament the absence of Dying Fetus, Suffocation, Zeke and Exhumed), but a good number of the label’s top-flight acts appear, among them Burnt by the Sun, Neurosis, the Dillinger Escape Plan, High on Fire, Dysrhythmia, Mastodon and Today Is the Day. Excellent camerawork (which varies slightly with each band) and semi-amusing backstage footage (Mastodon’s Troy Sanders cites George Jones and Neurosis as the only two artists who changed his life) make this a good package for both die-hards and casual fans.
