Utilitarian Workshop will close its West Side storefront

It was just about a year ago that we wrote about design studio/retail co-op Utilitarian Workshop opening a retail storefront on the West Side, at 1659 Summit. A very cool operation — but unfortunately not one built to last at that location. Earlier this week, UW announced on its website that it will be closing down the shop:

It is with a heavy heart, yet sincere optimism we announce the closing of our public retail operation at 1659 Summit in Kansas City Missouri. We have enjoyed your support in our mission to offer a creative venue dedicated to locally based designers and commerce. The last 12 months have seen our design/build/brand services expand into exciting new avenues. Having completed concepts for Second Best Coffee and Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters, UW is thrilled to be a part of Kansas City’s renewed focus on local development. The upcoming year will include new concepts and spaces from Heirloom Bakery & Hearth, Port Fonda and more!

It will stay open for its regular business hours (11 a.m.-7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 12-4 p.m. Sundays) through the end of July. From there, UW will continue to sell handmade goods via a series of pop-up shops. The first of those is September 5 and 6, at 1659 Summit. Products from Happy Habitat, Ampersand Design Studio, Feather Spring Arts, Object Enthusiast and KC CO will be for sale.
