USFL Vets Clash
The architects of the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers used to work in a business that Donald Trump once had in his hands. In 1984 and 1985, Chiefs General Manager Carl Peterson captured two United States Football League titles while running the Philadelphia Stars. A.J. Smith, the Chargers’ GM, worked as a scout for two USFL teams before hooking up with the heartbreak-destined Buffalo Bills. (Trump owned the USFL’s New Jersey Generals and encouraged the league to challenge the NFL with a fall schedule.) Peterson and Smith also have in common a head coach, Marty Schottenheimer. Luring Schottenheimer to KC is considered one of Peterson’s better moves. Smith and Shottenheimer couldn’t co-exist in San Diego, paving the way for current coach Norv Turner, who looks pained much of the time.
