Unicorn World, an interactive event featuring an enchanted forest and life-sized animatronic unicorns, hits the Kansas City Convention Center Oct. 7-8.

The event provides a storybook-like experience, based on a children’s book of the same title written by co-founders Patrick and Lauren Mines. In the story, the unicorns have lost their color and powers because of an evil magician.

“When you first enter, the first unicorns you see are these white majestic unicorns,” says Patrick Mines. “But as you exit before you get to the colorful unicorns, and they’re transformed, you also have a chance to transform yourself.”

You’ll enter Unicorn World through giant rainbow arches, where you’ll step into the Enchanted Unicorn Forest. From there, you’ll enter the arts and crafts section, where you can also view the book the event is based on. Then you’ll go into Rainbow Acres, the unicorn stables where they get their colors back. At the end, there are more activities, including ball pits, colorful swings, rides, bounce houses, games, professional photo ops, and a dance floor with a DJ.

There are five unicorns in total, and they all have their own personalities, likes and dislikes, and interests.

This will be the 15th Unicorn World event since Patrick and Lauren Mines started it in Dec. 2022. They started out by booking two of the events with the help of friends, and after seeing how successful they were, decided to keep going.

The couple is from Knoxville, TN, and they have three children. They decided to start Unicorn World after going to similar events with their children and feeling like those events were missing the magic and creativity that comes with being a kid.

“Seeing the joy, inspiration and creativity reflected in the faces of families when they experience the magic of Unicorn World drives us to bring this event to communities throughout the country,” says Lauren Mines. “Whether its tapping into your inner child meeting life-sized unicorns at Rainbow Acres or witnessing the awe of a little one while racing motorized unicorns in the Galloping Glen, Unicorn World is sure to bring a smile to your face.”

Though Patrick and Lauren Mines have largely marketed the event to children and families, they encourage people of all ages to attend. In fact, Patrick Mines says that he’s seen a lot of interest in the event from young adults, and they have tossed around the idea of having an adults-only night with drinks and a DJ.

Currently, they’re gearing up for more events through the end of 2023, and plan to keep traveling the event around the United States, but they have eyes on Canada and Mexico.

Tickets must be purchased in advance as they will not be available at the event, and time slots must be reserved to maintain crowd control.
