Ufter Du and Surfer Rosa

Alternative music lovers know the timeline by heart. Before Nirvana, there was a smaller band called the Pixies. And before the Pixies, there was an even smaller band called Hüsker Dü. They could exist without each other, but where’s the fun in that? (Fun facts: Kurt Cobain once cited the Pixies as one of his greatest influences; back in the day, Black Francis placed a classified ad for a bassist with an affinity for Hüsker Dü. The universe does have meaning.) Both bands made an indelible mark on the alternative music that we know and love today. Hence, tribute bands. Ufter Dü reunites late-’80s KC band Uft, with former members Steve Tulipana, Matt Ronan and Alex Alexander paying homage to Hüsker Dü’s signature post-hardcore punk, screaming vocals and eventual foray into lighter melodic material. Omaha’s Surfer Rosa features former members of Blah Buddah and Goodbye Sunday, delivering the blistering guitar, jangled Spanish and screaming beauty of the Pixies.
