Ty Tek

DJ Ty Tek has such a long history in the not-exactly-world-famous Denver dance scene, it’s surprising how inventive and intelligent his DJing is — but that’s true of most of the spinners in Colorado’s progressive Casa Del Soul collective. On his Web site, Tek describes his style as “funky fueled electro tech with a touch of tribalness.” Judging by the tracks posted at www.djtytek.com (OK, we fess up — we’ve never heard Tek live before), that’s pretty accurate. It’s house music aimed at gearheads and all who become mindless, dancing automatons whenever a funky tech-house beat is paired with a squelchy, robotic 303 bass line and garnished with “work the beat” vocals. Tek also operates one of Cowtown’s premier electronic-music stores, Sweat Records, which, like our hometown Deep Fix, supplies DJs the world over at www.sweatrecordsmusic.com. We’re betting that more than a few records at the shop bear Tek’s stamp — he’s been a producer even longer than he’s been up in da club.
