Two Stages, One Play

Tag team! Weighing in together at some 11 tons of community-theater ass stomp, the warriors of the City Theatre of Independence band together with the board-trodding bad seeds of Olathe Community Theatre Association for a two-theater, two-‘burb, no-holds-barred assault on Tom Dudzick’s dysfunctional family comedy Over the Tavern. Caught in the crosstown onslaught: actors, audiences, ’50s nostalgia, and anyone who believes that the arts thrive only in midtown. CTI brings it strong tonight at 8 by premiering this tale of a troubled Buffalo, New York, family in the 1950s — the son questions his catechism, the dad hates his job, and the sister starts to feel things down there — at the Roger T. Sermon Center (201 North Dodgion, Independence, 816-325-7367). Tomorrow the story starts again out south, when OCTA mounts the same comic account of Eisenhower-era denial on its stage at 8 p.m. at Olathe Community Theatre (500 East Loula, 913-782-2990). The drama continues at both theaters through the weekend and throughout the month. See olathetheatre.org and citytheatreofindependence.org for the schedules.
