Two 13-year-old Ohio boys steal car, drive to Kansas City
Monday night, KCPD officers found two 13-year-old boys sleeping in a downtown alley. It turns out that Cole Johnson and his pal, Raheem Harris, of Columbus, Ohio, had reason to be tuckered out. Two days earlier, they allegedly stole Johnson’s mother’s BMW and hit the road.
Amazing that in an age of car-tracking devices, GPS units, cell phones that constantly track location, traffic-surveillance cameras and police license-plate readers, Johnson and Harris successfully drove more than 650 miles before the law caught up with them.
Johnson’s mother, Catherine, told the Associated Press (from Chicago where she was waiting for a flight to pick up the road warriors), “How it went on for two days and no one noticed boggles my mind.”
But don’t get the wrong idea. These kids weren’t listening to a CD of covers of “Kansas City” on a loop while navigating the fastest course to Arthur Bryant’s and reading up on Google Fiber. Kansas City wasn’t intended to be the boys’ ultimate destination. Catherine Johnson tells the AP that the kids were driving to California. Jackson County Family Court took care of the boys overnight. They won’t be charged with a crime in Kansas City, the AP reports.
