Treasure Hunt

If there’s one event that local crate diggers don’t want publicized, it’s the annual For Your Ears Only sale in Lawrence. That’s because those vultures want to get their grubby little hands on the rare LPs, turntables, unopened eight-tracks and reel-to-reel tape recorders therein. But this is the land of capitalism, and a little healthy competition is a good thing — particularly if the beneficiary is a good cause. All of this sale’s proceeds go to the University of Kansas’ Audio-Reader program, a closed-circuit radio station that reads to more than 2,000 visually impaired subscribers. The festive atmosphere will be amplified by free food and an opening-night performance by the Lonesome Hobos. Listen to the band’s vintage country and hobo tunes while hawks scour the 12,000-plus LPs and 2,000-plus CDs. Tickets cost $10; get first crack at the goods from 6 to 9 tonight at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Lawrence (2110 Harper, 785-749-1737). Admission is free from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Fri., Sept. 19, 6-9 p.m.; Sat., Sept. 20, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 2008
