Train

There are surely those who’ve heard Drops of Jupiter so many times it’s become drops of water torture, and it’s tough to back a band that drops the phrase soy latte into a hit song. Still, Train‘s roots-pop is a few cuts above most bands working that track, and with My Private Nation, a band that at first seemed as if it wanted to be the Band, or even R.E.M., has revealed its E.L.O. aspirations. It still drops shopping references, albeit funnier ones, into its tunes like raisins into Raisin Bran. (Tell me what it’s like … to be the Neiman-Marcus of the mall, singer Pat Monahan says in “All-American Girl.”) But its new stuff reveals an AM-radio sweetness mingled with a sense of humor that Jupiter never quite let out. “Calling All Angels,” a sly prayer for hope that’s going to be all over the radio this summer, might be exactly the right antidote for that icky soy aftertaste.
