Tough Chicks

Local roller-derby chicks, rugby girls and female footballers have battered their competition and put the fear of Kansas City into athletes across the country, proving that women can tackle and block as well as any man. The Roller Warriors recently skated to a national championship, the KC Storm finished at the top of its division in the National Women’s Football Association and the Jazz Rugby Club has rucked its way to No. 15 in the nation. Today, these three groups of badass women finally meet. The wood chips will fly from 1 to 4 p.m. behind Grinders as teams from each sports club match up in off-the-wall athletic entanglements — including an obstacle course and a pillow fight — during the KC Women’s Extreme Sports Challenge. The tongue-in-cheek smackdown is the first event cooked up by the KC Women’s Sports Association, an organization supporting nontraditional female athletics, which aims to raise funds for the teams’ equipment and travel expenses. Tickets cost $10 in advance from brownpapertickets.com/event/20455or $15 at the gate. For information, see myspace.com/kcex tremesports.
