Tonight: Young Lions hip-hop showcase at the Brick (MP3 enhanced)

It would be easy to make an association between spring images — blinking baby birds and fluffy newborn bunnies — and the litter of five just-hatched rappers performing this Friday at the Brick.
Even though Greg Enemy recently turned 21, he grabs the mic with the confidence of a battle-scarred vet. At 22, thePhantom has already released two albums. AWE, at 21, was holding it down on stages before he was old enough to drink. Atilla‘s beats and lyrics seem fitting for a performer with more mileage than his 21 years. The youngest on the bill, 19-year-old Head Fella, is a threat on the mic and the MPC.
No wonder Reach, the considerably more mature MC who organized the show, calls this lineup the Young Lions. “They’ve all made strides independently to establish themselves here in Kansas City,” he says. “That’s a characteristic that I find admirable, so I’m always willing to help artists who’ve helped themselves.”
The show starts at 10 p.m. at the Brick, and no younger lions allowed; this show is 21-plus.
