Throwback Thursday: Take a trip back to the post-rock early ’00s with the Storied Northwest

If there’s anything we miss about the early aughts, it’s the vast array of post-rock and post-hardcore bands that regularly played out in and around the area. Whether bigger names like the Casket Lottery or house-show regulars like the Trelese, pulsing rhythms and breakdowns were the music of the day. It was a natural extension of the “Kansas City sound” popularized and defined by ’90s acts such as Season to Risk and Sacrifice Isaac, filtered through the anger and aggression of someone like Coalesce.

Watching this nearly decade-and-a-half-old live set from the Storied Northwest, you start to wonder whether or not it was ahead of its time. A melodic band with hooks and heaviness could clean up these days, but this trio never really made it past a six-song CD-R and a bunch of local shows — which, as this video shows, could attract a pretty good crowd.

The audio’s pretty clean, but do expect a little fuzz and hiss, to say nothing of the occasional tracking error from this bit of VHS historical record.

The Storied Northwest also have a retrospective release on Bandcamp and can be found on Facebook.
