Throwback MP3 of the Week: Nothing to Gain, “Beer Is Good Soup”

When some bands leave the local music scene, they leave a vacuum. Such is the case with Topeka’s Nothing to Gain. They were the sort of band that worshiped at the feet of Murphy’s Law. Fast, metal-tinged punk numbers that were about getting drunk as fuck and partying.

I heard this album at a small gathering for a now-defunct website, where fellow music journo Scott Alisoglu played Beer Is Good Soup at ear-splitting volume on the stereo. The verdict was that the album was a “raging inferno of punk.” Damn thing kicked my ass from here to next Tuesday, and the follow-up, In Your Face, was more of the same, only sped up and cranked up.

Nothing to Gain played quite a few performances during their time, knocking out the entirety of Beer Is Good Soup at most shows, along with covers like NOFX‘s “Linoleum.” They were together a few years, then they just seemed to drop off the face of the planet. I saw their former lead singer a few years back at a Boobie Trap show, but since then, I’ve seen neither hide nor hair of anyone in the band.
