Throwback MP3 of the Week: Dragqueen, “Come Down”
Of all the acts around Kansas City I’ve seen over the years, it’s Dragqueen that bummed me out most with their demise. There was such potential in that four-piece to go on and be huge. They released one EP, Surprise Dead Superstar, and played out regularly, and they had this big rock sound that punched you right in the chest every time they played. The combination of hard rock and catchy songs meant Dragqueen could open for everyone — be it Sister Mary Rotten Crotch or Danger Bob.
Now, they’ve been rumored to have a reunion show about every two years since they broke up, but despite the fact that you can find the band on MySpace (with a fairly detailed setup for a band that’s been defunct for well over half a decade), it’s not going to happen, so says said MySpace.
They had another album that never saw the light of day, due to the fact that the band broke up. Originally called U.S. Blondes, it was redubbed God Save the Dragqueen, and is eight tracks of ass-kicking rock ‘n’ roll. The track below, “Come Down,” sounds like a cross between Nirvana and Black Sabbath, with an intro best appreciated with headphones or in front of a very large pair of speakers.
