Thursday, a classic rock double feature hit Azura Amphitheater when ’60s hitmakers Three Dog Night and ’70s classic rockers Little River Band took to the stage to play through a selection of tracks you’ve been hearing since you were born.
Three Dog Night took the stage at Azura with an air of warm familiarity. Decades of performing their well-known catalog etched into their handshake with the audience while sprinkling in newer songs as well.
Playing favorites like “Black and White,” “Never Been To Spain,” “One,” and “Mama Told Me Not To Come” just brought back more memories than the last. Finishing the night with “Joy To The World” was the icing on the cake. I even saw one woman waving her cane in the air. I was expecting stiff mannequins after 57 years together, but it truly was anything but.
Celebrating their 50th anniversary, Little River Band stopped at Azura Amphitheater for their Happy Announcement Tour where they played all the hits and introduced brand new songs. Wayne Nelson’s basslines were tight and confident, anchoring the nostalgic groove with a calm command, while guitarist Colin Whinnery’s solos rang out sharp and melodic, electrifying the amphitheater.
However, the night’s most unexpected moment was when Chris Marion stepped out from behind his keyboard rig with a black and red keytar strapped over his shoulder. With the crowd already excited, Marion strutted toward center stage and launched it behind his back and continued to play without missing a beat.
The band kept the momentum rolling with “Reminiscing” and “Lady,” inviting sing-alongs that echoed through the hills of Bonner Springs. As their set seemingly came to a close, they belted out “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin, then right into “Help Is On Its Way.” For a band who’s been on the road for fifty years, they sure know how to make every show feel brand new.
