This Week We Love…

First there was the post on Argument Machine, the local music message board. Then came the MySpace bulletin. Kansas Citian and Pitch freelancer Megan Metzger had made the pages of Glamour magazine, in the July cover feature “The Top 40 Summer Dos and Don’ts,” an image-heavy instruction manual on fashions to adopt (“do make sure clothes … are fitted!”) and styles to avoid (“don’t wear all your budget trendy stuff together!”).

Our girl Megan? A photo of her taken at South By Southwest landed squarely in the Don’ts. Apparently the Condé Nast publication finds flouncy mini-skirts paired with pink hoodies more offensive than the excessive use of exclamation points. Which, frankly, is beyond us.

Even more strange, the editorial staff of Glamour seems to espouse a truly bizarre philosophy, evident through the rest of the issue, in which one can solve any sartorial quandary simply by adding a belt. In fact, it’s almost as if emphasizing one’s waist resolves all dilemmas. Lose a boyfriend? Cinch it high! Lose a job? Add one in a bright color! Lose a limb? Well … try two belts! We’re afraid Megan’s true crime was that she was buckle-free.

OK, so maybe, from time to time, we snicker over a stranger’s wardrobe choices. But we can still appreciate when a girl wears what she wants, when she wants — Glamour Don’ts be damned.

That’s why this week we love Megan Metzger
