This Week We Love…
An advance copy landed on our desk last week of Davy Rothbart’s Found II — his hilarious second collection of lost, tossed and forgotten items from around the world. On page 54, we discovered an open letter from a desperate Lee’s Summit resident.
“Jenny” had left a bachelorette party early — her bachelorette party — to ride some married cowboy. They hooked up once more, and she began calling him daily. Then he changed his phone service.
In her letter, Jenny pledges her love and provides this brief description of the philanderer: “He has a 5-year-old kid and he was dark haired and rode bulls.”
Where was the letter found? In the Westport parking lot surrounding the Beaumont Club — on every single car. Because Jenny and the Cowboy met at Denim and Diamonds in the Northland, we can only imagine that she papered the pickup trucks of every country dance hall from here to, well, Whiskey Tango.
So even though part of us would like to award our affections to Jenny on the merits of her tenacity, we actually owe this fantastic voyeuristic exploit to the person who submitted Jenny’s letter to Found II in the first place: a Kansas City Art Institute student who doesn’t frequent the Beaumont but does work a few doors down at the Tivoli.
That’s why this week we love Megan Mantia.
