The Worst Film Quotes of the Year!

By SCOTT WILSON

Shawn! Edwards!

Now that every newspaper, magazine and blog (including, of course, The Pitch) has run its annual roundup of solemn proclamations on the state of cinema and browbeating best-movies lists, settle back and read eFilmCritic’s Criticwatch 2007.

The quasi-watchdog report walks the movie reviewers’ hall of shame, stopping to offer portraits of last year’s greasiest quote whores – including KC’s Shawn Edwards, a Criticwatch fixture (and onetime Pitch writer). It also provides an alternative history of movies last year by demonstrating how even reliable critics and good writers can be overzealous in their demands that readers see certain movies — not necessarily good movies. In the spirit of the eager movie reviewer, then, here are a few notes on eFilmCritic’s long, long list (which includes fairly earned shots at some of our own writers).

The Kansas City Star’s Robert W. Butler likes Meg Ryan but loves Dane Cook!

Wilonsky, the superlative king

Robert Wilonsky, whose reviews appear in The Pitch, loves superlatives!

Scott Foundas, whose byline also runs here, sometimes can’t resist exclamatory raves!

Shawn Edwards called Hairspray one of the best movies of the year!

Except for No Reservations, which Edwards called “the most delightful movie of the year!”

And Mr. Magorium’s Magic Emporium, which he called “the most magical movie of the year!”

And Resident Evil: Extinction, which he called “the most exciting movie of the year!”

And Transformers, which he promised was “the most original movie of the year!”

And I Am Legend, which Edwards swore on a stack of Bibles was “the best movie of the year!”

Note: No exclamation points were added to the above quotes.
