A trip to Brookside’s Heirloom Bakery and Hearth can be many things: lunch, a coffee date, a study session. Ultimately, though, it is a test of willpower. Can you get out of there without inhaling one of the bakery’s salted oatmeal whoopie pies filled with luscious buttercream frosting? Oh my, what’s that? A lemon goat-cheese cheesecake? Dear god, is that a housemade s’more pop tart? A pumpkin cinnamon roll? Fresh-fruit galette? Worst of all, these beautiful, tempting, expertly crafted desserts are made fresh every day. So—we’ve given up. Even the oversized, shareable ones we now simply devour alone, guilty but deeply satisfied, grateful for the sweet moments of bliss we experience in the vanishing seconds before the treat is gone.
