The Swedish Way

For 138 years, Broadway Church (3931 Washington) has ushered in Christmas morning with the traditional Swedish celebration of Julotta, in honor of the church’s cultural roots. Join the congregation this morning for the lighting of 126 Advent candles, followed by American and Scandinavian Christmas hymns led by Swedish schoolteacher Nick Englen. Don’t fear, non-Nordic people, English and Swedish translations of the lyrics are provided, so the language is your choice. A bilingual reading of the Christmas story from the Bible follows the musical portion of the service. The program concludes with coffee and Swedish pastries in Fellowship Hall. Kansas City’s only remaining Julotta begins bright and early at 6 a.m. That might seem early, but Julotta services in Sweden begin as early as 4 a.m. For more information, call 816-561-3274 or see— Jill Muir
