The Souveneers, Dance American (Review)
The Souveneers
Dance American
(Little Class Records)
There’s a lot of echo in the Souveneers’ Dance American. Initially, it sounds like the rockabilly trio recorded everything live, with outdated equipment — in a way, that feels basic rather than cool. It’s a first impression that doesn’t inspire high expectations.
But refinement isn’t the Souveneers’ point, and Dance benefits from touches that set it apart from various other Sun Records–worshipping acts that populate the roots genre. “Christ Lovin’ Daughter,” with its out-of-nowhere background harmonies, feels robust. “The Devil and Me” and “Long Road Home” gain rustic energy from mandolin parts. Best of all might be album closer “Girl Too Young,” on which the Souveneers’ campfire-hoedown vibe finds its fullest expression. Damn those first impressions — the Souveneers make for excellent company.
