The Soccer Mom

Evidence that Johnson County invented more than Corporate Woods is on exhibit at the Johnson County Museum of History. Made in Johnson County highlights the products, inventions and businesses that put the area on the map as it evolved from a podunk agricultural scene to an industrial behemoth specializing in rocket powder and Valomilk candy cups. Among the exhibit’s illuminations are strange situations (Ray Otis McIntire’s accidental
discovery of Styrofoam) and obvious nonsurprises (“Golf clubs are manufactured in Johnson County?”). You can also get the 411 on such prominent JoCo ventures as Delco Battery, King Radio, Garmin International and Lee jeans. Made in Johnson County runs through August 12 at the museum (6305 Lackman Road in Shawnee,
913-715-2550). Hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
