The Repeal Is Real

Marc Wolf’s Obie Award-winning solo show, Another American: Asking and Telling, begins at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre on the meteor tail of last month’s repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” From more than 150 interviews conducted with former and current service members and their families, politicians, academics and military officials, Wolf has constructed a portrait of our national controversy over gays in the military, told from many different perspectives and angles. Though the ban is about to be lifted, the struggle is far from over. In fact, “don’t ask, don’t tell” originally emerged as a compromise policy intended to protect gay military personnel from the violence and harassment they had suffered for decades. In the upcoming implementation process, the military faces the very big task of ensuring their safety and integration. This production explores the issues through February 6 at the KC Rep’s Spencer Theatre (4949 Cherry). Tickets run $15-$40. Call
