The Red Ribbon Army

Way to go, AIDS. You’re such an international scourge that the United Nations gave you your own day. It’s not exactly a celebratory move, even though events acknowledging World AIDS Day can be somewhat partylike, with refreshments and chitchat. Example: the World AIDS Day Reception in the lobby of the Bank of America Gallery in the lower level of Union Station (30 West Pershing Road) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This classy cocktail reception, presented by the AIDS Service Foundation of Greater Kansas City, is an opportunity to honor those affected by AIDS and support a local organization that helps them. The reception includes a short program, which recognizes lives claimed by AIDS and people still battling the disease. A $35 donation, requested at the door, supports the AIDS Service Foundation’s mission of education and direct help. See asfkc.org.— Crystal K. Wiebe
