The Pitch has a new music editor

I guess I should start by saying that I’m not from here. You’d figure that out for yourself within moments, but I figured I’d save you the time. I’m from Minneapolis, the land of Prince, the Jayhawks and the Replacements.

No, I don’t pronounce it like “Minne-snow-taaaaahhhhh.” No one in Minneapolis really talks like that. (People a few towns outside of Minneapolis, perhaps.)

There are approximately 437 miles between my beloved Minneapolis and me. Just last week, I grabbed that town by both cheeks and kissed it goodbye. Now I’m here, in this haven of barbecue and blues, where passing strangers on the street smile at me and ask how I’m doing. I have only recently learned that they are not trying to sell me anything, and that people here are really just that nice.

I’m Natalie Gallagher. I’ll be the new music editor at the Pitch, since David Hudnall is stepping into a new role as a staff writer. (Yes, that’s right – he’s sticking around, so if you ever feel like griping about me, Hudnall will be here to listen to you.) I’ve been writing about music for the Minneapolis City Pages for the past three years, and I’m so excited to discover everything that Kansas City has going on. Y’all have a solid music scene here – then again, I couldn’t have moved for any less.

In my attempt to be a casual fly on the wall, I’ve slowly been introducing myself to people here. Last month, I visited town for the Pitch Music Awards. At the Crossroads Music Festival this past Saturday, I sampled some other homegrown favorites. I’m so excited about what I’ve seen and heard so far, and even more so about what I have yet to discover.

Oh, Kansas City. I think we’re going to have fun together, you and I.
