The man, the myth, the hot sauce: Mythos Sauce Co heats up the KC metro
If someone asks if you want ketchup on something, you typically know what you’re getting. Hot sauce is a different story—every bottle on the shelf is entirely unique, with different base flavors, heat levels, and supporting tastes. For Zach Mason, who owns Mythos Sauce Co. and creates the collection of sauces on offer, finding those unique, untapped flavor profiles is the best part of the game.
“I got started by growing super-hot peppers,” Mason says. “I thought I’d maybe wind up with just a few, but I had hundreds of peppers on hand and needed to do something with them. I started making hot sauce with them and gave them away to coworkers. When I started getting people coming back and asking for more, I started honing my recipes and thinking about if this was something I could turn into a business.”
Being a self-proclaimed mythology nerd, Mason decided to create sauces inspired by the Norse gods Thor and Loki, and he named his fledgling business Mythos Sauce Company. As he started delving into different flavor profiles, he also started expanding his branding. “It felt wrong to name a green-chile-and-cumin sauce after a Norse deity, so we went to Mayan myths and named it after the winged serpent Kukulkan. That opened the door for tons of new flavor combos and pantheons to explore.”
Sometimes, that means experimental “sauce-of-the-month” options, like the strawberry-mint hot sauce named after the Cherokee sun goddess, Unelanuhi, or the Scovie Award-winning ginger-tamari-pear sauce Shinigami. Other times, it means recurring, seasonal bottles or “blow the roof off” sauces that use ghost peppers, Carolina reapers, and other super-hot peppers.
All told, Mythos Sauce Company has six “all-the-time” sauces that you can find online or at a number of spots around town. Mason sets up shop at the Overland Park, Mission, and City Market farmers’ markets during the season, and locations like Taco Naco, Local Pig, Hemma Hemma, and more also stock Mythos sauces. If you’ve been looking for some new ways to spice up your meals, your prayers have been answered with Mythos Sauce Company.
