The Majestic

There is no substitute for the steak-jazz-and-martini craving that hits once the bank account rebounds and the night air begins to chill. Though the niche in Kansas City is full of offerings specific to this combination, fans of the Majestic can indulge again. The long, narrow space at 931 Broadway, erected in 1911, has reopened as a restaurant rather than a mere steakhouse. The classy place offers some affordable menu items as well as live jazz Monday through Saturday and a drink menu that focuses on old-school cocktails. “The selection will be more manly and winter-heavy,” manager Jason Belz says. Formerly a speakeasy, the small downstairs jazz club (72-person capacity) goes full swing on Friday and Saturday nights, often featuring the stride piano of Bram Wijnands. Though reservations are recommended for dinner, there is still plenty of room to enjoy a sweet martini or just sip a bourbon upstairs at the bar or in the front lounge.
