The Kansas City Symphony brings the Wizard of Oz to Kauffman this Thursday

I first saw The Wizard of Oz when I was in middle school, on a boring afternoon spent at my grandmother’s house. She stocked only the classics on VHS, and watching some doe-eyed girl in pigtails sing about rainbows in black-and-white seemed like punishment to me (though it looked better than Citizen Kane). By the end of the film, I was enchanted; I shoved the video in my backpack and wore it out on the television at home. For most Americans of a certain generation, Judy Garland has that effect.

On Thursday night, the Kansas City Symphony is offering the opportunity to see Garland’s landmark performance as Dorothy on the big screen and hear the original, remastered Oz recordings accompanied by the live orchestra. You can experience the classic 1939 film like you never have before – or take someone who never has and introduce them to the magic.
