The Indie 600

The Just Off Broadway Theatre (3051 Central in Penn Valley Park) is ground zero for a frenzied day of guerrilla cinema when the Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City presents its ninth-annual One Night Stand today. The premise is simple, but the execution is a bitch: Filmmaking teams register at 9 a.m. (for a $25 entry fee). At 9:30, each team draws at random a theme, an object and a line of dialogue from a famous movie — each of which must be incorporated into its minimum opus. Then, bang! They’re off to make art at a breakneck pace — writing, shooting and editing a short film in just 10 hours, then submitting it to the IFCKC’s panel of judges by 7:30 p.m. The audience has the easy part: You just need to arrive by 8 p.m. with $8 in hand ($5 for IFCKC members).
