The Hold Steady headed to Columbia, Lawrence this spring

It has been four years since the Hold Steady last released an album – 2010’s Heaven Is Whenever. For a time, it seemed like the wordiest bar band in Brooklyn might be hanging it up. Nobody appeared to be having any fun onstage during the Heaven tour, and in early 2012, frontman Craig Finn released an underrated alt-country solo record.
But now, 10 years since forming, the Hold Steady is back with a new album, Teeth Dreams, on a new record label, Washington Square. From the singles the band has teased, it sounds like its penchant for Thin Lizzy/Cheap Trick arena rock has given way to a more Foo Fighters style of arena rock. I don’t know quite how I feel about that just yet, but I’ve loved pretty much everything Craig Finn has been involved with, dating back to Lifter Puller, so I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt.
Also: they’re heading our way soon.
The Hold Steady will be at the Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri, on Saturday, April 26. Two nights later, the band will be at the Granada in Lawrence, for a show on Monday, April 28. Deer Tick will open. Tickets on sale this Friday.
