The Folk Alliance International introduces its Greater Kansas City Area Music Directory

If you’re involved in the local music scene even a little bit, here’s something you’ve probably wished for at one point or another: a virtual Rolodex containing contact information for musicians, producers, bands, music stores, studios and everything else music-related. The good news: The Folk Alliance International is well on its way to providing you with such a resource. They are calling it the Greater Kansas City Music Directory (GKCMD).

According to the website, the GKCMD will be “a comprehensive guide to musicians and music related resources in the Greater Kansas City area.” Mikal Shapiro and Kasey Rausch – the co-hosts of the popular Sunday radio show River Trade Radio on KFFI 90.1 – are managing the project, with the help and guidance of former Folk Alliance International director Louis Meyers.

It’s a big job, gathering all the information of everyone in the KC music industry. You can help: If you are a musician, producer, music- or record-store owner, manager or other type of affiliate, click here to create your listing. Getting listed in the directory is free. The deadline for entry is Sunday, February 1. The directory will launch on Thursday, February 19.

The Folk Alliance International conference will take place February 18-22 at the Westin Crown Center in Kansas City. Details here

Side note:
H/T to Stuart Hinds, the assistant dean of Special Collections and Archives at the University of Missouri, who let us know that the UMKC Libraries have a similar resource: The Greater Kansas City Musicians Directory, a guide developed back in 1913. It’s quite outdated, but for the interested music historian, fascinating. Go here to read more about the UMKC Libraries’ collection.
