The Download

The MC known as El-P returns this March with I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, his first proper album in five years. As the CEO of the Definitive Jux record label, he’s sure to be supported by a laundry list of rappers and producers in his employ, so we weren’t surprised that when he leaked an MP3 of “Smithereens (Stop Cryin’),” the song featured fellow Def Jukies Hangar 18. The track, which features labelmates Windnbreez and Alaska of Hangar 18, showcases his usual apocalyptic brand of hip-hop, but what ought to make the upcoming LP stand out are contributions from artists such as Trent Reznor, the Mars Volta and TV on the Radio. Even Cat Power’s Chan Marshall makes an appearance, though it’s safe to say that El-P won’t be the next face of Chanel. — Andy Vihstadt www.pitchforkmedia.com (search: El-P)
