The Disney Project

“We’re really raping the whole Disney songbook more than idolizing it,” says bassist Johnny Hamil. Reprising a series of shows from four or five years ago, Hamil, along with four other local jazz experimenters — Brad Cox on piano, Christine Brebes on violin, and saxophonists Pat Conway and Mark Southerland — are doing to the classic Disney songs what those mysterious wafers did to Alice. There won’t be much opportunity to sing along as this ensemble rips into trippy versions of otherwise innocent tunes such as “We Are Siamese,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and “Cruella De Vil,” but it’s not like those original recordings haven’t been stuck in your subconscious for the past 20 years anyway. Also on the bill is an incarnation of local out-jazz group Snuff Jazz that uses toy instruments. Halfway through this show, some Wonderland wafers will come in reeeeal handy.
