The Dandy Warhols

Portland, Oregon-based the Dandy Warhols are touring in support of the recently issued original version of their 2002 album Welcome to the Monkey House. In 2001, mean old Capitol Records took the original Russell Elavedo-engineered version away and glammed it up with big, meaty synthesizers and mixing work by Duran Duran keyboardist Nick Rhodes. It’s actually great. But it wasn’t the band’s original intention. Now the original version, renamed The Dandy Warhols Are Sound, is available for the purists and the pedants. For longtime fans of the best Velvet Underground-influenced pop quartet to emerge from the 1990s, it’s like hearing a CD from an alternate dimension, one where all four band members — Courtney Taylor-Taylor, Zia McCabe, Peter Holmström and Brent DeBoer — have goatees. In performance, the Dandies are generous to their fans. Anyone hoping for “Bohemian Like You,” “We Used to Be Friends,” “Smoke It,” “Godless” or “Minnesoter” will probably not go home disappointed.
