The Corner Restaurant stops serving dinner

One week ago, Michael Pfeifer and Dawn Slaughter, the owners of the reincarnated Corner Restaurant in Westport (4059 Broadway) made a tough decision: no more dinners. Breakfast and lunch business was good at the four-month-old historic hipster hangout, but the evening meal wasn’t catching on.

“We just couldn’t get it to take off,” Pfeifer says. “And we did everything we could.”

Everything wasn’t enough to please Westport retailer Andy Chambers, owner of the Wonderland shop across the street.

“I was surprised that they stopped serving dinner because every time we looked across the street, the place seemed busy. There would be people at the bar, people eating dinner. It seemed to be kind of successful.”

Chambers was, however, underwhelmed by his only dinner in the restaurant: “The chicken and waffles was sort of skimpy for $15. I think I got one very small chicken wing and a fried chicken tender and two mediocre waffles. The appetizer was a stuffed mushroom cap. Cap as in singular. It was a big cap, filled with an unmemorable stuffing and, I believe, canned shrimp and a sauce that was so weird that our waitress couldn’t even tell us what it was.”

Chambers is a big fan of the Corner’s breakfasts: “I eat there all the time, so don’t make them mad at me,”

The new hours of the Corner are from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week.
