The Allman Betts Revival Tour celebrates rock legacy when it hits the Uptown
Making its first-ever stop in Kansas City on Sunday, December 15, at the Uptown, the Allman Betts Revival Tour is in its eighth annual go-round. Featuring Devon Allman and Duane Betts, along with a revolving cast of musicians and special guests, the tour showcases the music of the Allman Brothers Band. Each show features two sets, the first featuring music from the ’70s Duane Allman era, while the second features music from the band’s ’90s comeback era.
It’s a chance to hear the music of the legendary bluesy Southern rockers live, taking those who were there when it all happened the first time back to the band’s heyday, while allowing those too young or not born yet to experience classic songs as they were meant to be heard.
The Allman Betts Revival Tour takes on a special meaning this year, as it’s the first to take place following the passing of Dickey Betts, the Allman Brothers’ former lead guitarist, this past April. In celebration of their fathers’ legacy, we spoke with Devon Allman and Duane Betts ahead of the show.
The Pitch: Is it emotional getting up there and playing these songs from your parents?
Duane Betts: There’s always a certain emotional attachment playing these songs and certain ones more than others. It really varies from night to night. Sometimes the spirit hits you when you least expect it. We try to honor the music and the spirit.
Devon Allman: It can be, from time to time. Ultimately, we all wish they were still here to play these timeless songs. Most times, you just keep your nose down and do the job which is trying to do the song and the spirit of the song justice…other times it can get emotional.
Where do you draw the line in terms of setlists, or is everything up for grabs?
Duane Betts: We usually have discussions about different themes and angles from year to year with the Revival tour. Obviously, with all the guests we have to think of who would be a great fit with certain songs so it can get tricky. We try to strike a balance.
Devon Allman: We’ve pulled from multiple bags … the 1970s original era, the ’90s comeback era, the solo records, etc. … we try to always keep the show moving forward in a progressive manner, giving the audience a bit of what they want and expect while throwing in some curveballs.
How do you choose who your special guests will be and what songs they’ll do?
Duane Betts: We have certain guests who are mainstays but the cast always changes from year to year. It’s really about reaching out to folks we dig and seeing if they want to do it. That simple.
Devon Allman: I think the style and vibe of the guest can dictate where they end up in the set for sure, I end up becoming more like a casting director fitting the right singer to the song … it’s exhausting but also very rewarding when it all comes together.
What does playing the Ryman mean to you overall, and what’s so special about this upcoming performance?
Duane Betts: The Ryman has always been such an amazing venue to play for all of us musicians. The history is unparalleled, and it has a very comforting, friendly vibe. I feel honored any time I get to step on that stage.
Devon Allman: The Ryman has become a bit like our Grand Central Station to the tour … lots of special folks have shown up to lend their talents. This year, having Slash perform with Revival is such a cool addition, we can’t wait to see what he plays on some of this material.
Why did you add Kansas City to this tour?
Duane Betts: We could just play the same exact cities every year but what’s the fun in that? We want to go to new cities and give the people the opportunity to see this show. It’s 18 cities a year so we want to spread it out and see new faces!
Devon Allman: Kansas City has always had a place in my heart from way back in the day of playing Sandstone with Dad, The Uptown with The Schwag, and Knuckleheads for years and years with various groups. I felt it was time to give Revival a shot in K.C. and build a relationship with our traveling circus and the city. Plus I want my fill of Joe’s BBQ!
