Tequila Sophisticate

As though the art, music, food and dancing in the streets weren’t reasons enough to hit the streets of downtown Kansas City on First Fridays, here’s another one: tequila. Many of us north of the border have probably spent at least one ill-advised evening pounding shots at the bar and then indulging in a fistfight, unfettered sobbing or public nudity (or all three). But it turns out that this favorite Mexican libation is filled with as many subtly nuanced flavors and is produced with as much love and passion as any wine. West Side restaurant and market Los Alamos (1667 Summit) is known for its homemade salsas and traditional Mexican dishes, but its owners are also passionate about their booze. Arrive between 5 and 8 p.m. to try several varieties of tequila — including some intended to be sipped, not pounded — as well as a selection of wines, for $5. Call 816-471-0450.
