The Charlotte Street Foundation has launched an awards program for local performing artists. Tonight’s free, one-night-only to-do toasts the first three recipients of the 5K cash prizes and puts them right where they belong — on Kansas City’s newest, most state-of-the-art stage. On the Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s Copaken Stage in the H&R Block Building (13th Street and Walnut, 816-221-5115), each of the 2008 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Fellows will present more of the ambitious work first cooked up in the West Bottoms and the Crossroads. Choreographer DeAnna Hiett joins seven other dancers for a piece set to the music of Vas and Sezen Aksu. Junkyard jazz king Mark Southerland (pictured below) and friends will offer Urban Noise Camp, a musical tribute to the moon that involves a tent city, rewarding improvisations, and his marvelous bent and sculpted saxophones. Ron Megee will also work the tent-city angle in a performance-art piece about life beneath Kansas City’s bridges and under the poverty line. The 8 p.m. performance is free and open to the public.
