DJ Superwolf has been around the local R&B and soul record-collecting syndicate for some time, spinning the obscure and familiar alike — funky hits by legendary Curtis Mayfield and virtually forgotten Gloria Jones, the original crooner of the cloying, much-covered “Tainted Love.” (Jones’ heartfelt rendition is anything but obnoxious.) Even if you’re not a vinylphile like the Wolfman (whose real name is James Trotter), you’ll still groove to his sweet vintage beats — what’s soul music for if not dancing? Plus, Charlie’s is one of the coziest dives in midtown; but because the sound system isn’t exactly state of the art, expect a lot of clicking and fuzz pumping out of the PA — which only adds to the bar’s charming retro feel. —
