Sunday Strikes

Unlike actors and hairstylists, who traditionally get Mondays off, most service-industry employees — waitstaff, bartenders, managers, cooks and door-security folks — work varied schedules. But because Sunday nights are relatively slow in the restaurant business, that evening is an obvious pick for Service Industry Night at the Power & Light District’s Lucky Strike Lanes & Lounge (1370 Grand, 816-471-2316). The city’s most glamorous bowling venue has offered special Sunday-night deals for service personnel for a while, says Lucky Strike’s general manager, Barry Pointer, “but we’ve only started really promoting it, and it’s really gone wild. Since December, our Sunday business has increased 150 percent.”The Sunday deal for service-industry staffers — who must show their Liquor Control cards — is $1 per game of bowling and $1 shoe rentals — from 9 p.m. until close. There are drink specials, too, and those are available to all patrons. “At the end of the week, everyone needs to blow off steam,” Pointer says. Sounds like a good tip.
